Growing up with Independence: The Blind Child's Use of the White Cane

(The following address was delivered at the Fall Convention of the National Federation of the Blind of California in Sacramento, California, on November 1, 1980.) My topic today pertains to blind children growing up with independence through the use of the white cane. As is often the case, this discussion stems from two divergent philosophies. On the one hand, the National Federation of the Blind believes that blind children are simply normal children who happen to be blind.

New Mexico Gets A Commission for the Blind

In describing our movement, we have often said, "The future is ours." Through these words we have expressed our determination to hold fast to our goals and true to our convictions with the promise of shaping a future where the blind will be able to live lives of full equality as first-class citizens. February 18, 1986, represents a day of triumph for blind people throughout New Mexico. For on that day the legislature of the state of New Mexico created a commission for the blind to administer rehabilitation programs throughout the state.
